24 March 2010 – The Geneva-based Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) today welcomed the adoption by the UN Human Rights Council of a resolution on housing rights in the context of “mega-events” such as the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

“Mega-events threaten the housing rights of hundreds of thousands globally,” said Salih Booker, Executive Director of COHRE.

“Today's resolution by the Human Rights Council demonstrates international recognition of this threat and is a step in the right direction towards offering some protection to people living in countries planning to host mega-events.”
