Forced Evictions Links
In addition to the work of COHRE (www.cohre.org), there are many organisations and
groups around the world who are, in different ways, resisting forced evictions. They
provide information, resources, legal assistance and /or media support. Many also work
directly in alliance with communities threatened by evictions. Together, these organisations
and groups are beginning to present powerful opposition and viable alternatives to forced
evictions and the violation of the right to adequate housing.
You can get further information on a selection of such groups at the following links:
Asian Coalition for Housing Rights ACHR is a regional network of grassroots community organizations, NGO's and professionals involved with urban poor development processes in Asian cities. ACHR provides a forum for these groups to share experiences, tackle the large problem of forced evictions in the region's cities, develop opportunities for organisations of the poor and consider their place in city planning. ACHR is involved in numerous regional programmes and does a great deal of anti-evictions work in the Asia region.
Cities Alliance
The Cities Alliance was launched in 1999 as a global alliance of cities and their
development partners, committed to improve the living conditions of the urban poor
through action in two key areas: City Development Strategies; and City-wide and
Nationwide Slum Upgrading Initiatives. The Cities Alliance promotes the concept of
inclusive urban citizenship, which emphasises active consultation by local authorities with
the urban poor. Such initiatives can offer important alternatives to forced evictions.
European Roma Rights Center
ERRC is an international public interest law organisation, which monitors the human rights
situation of Roma and provides legal defence in cases of human rights abuse. The ERRC
acts to combat racism and discrimination through advocacy, litigation, training and policy
development.
Egyptian Center for Housing Rights
ECHR is a non governmental organization specialized in claming for, and defending the
right to adequate housing in Egypt, particularly for the weakest strata of the society.
FoodFirst Information and Action Network
FIAN is a human rights organization promoting the right to feed oneself. FIAN has
members in all parts of the world. There is enough food for everyone, now and in the
future. FIAN International defends the right of ordinary people to feed themselves in
dignity, which is intimately linked to land and housing rights, and the right to protection
against forced eviction.
Inner City Resource Centre
The Inner City Resource Centre is a non-profit advocacy and information
centre focussing on housing and service delivery related problems in the
Johannesburg inner city area.
International Institute for Environment and Development
The IIED Human Settlements Programme works to reduce poverty and improve
environment, health and housing conditions in the urban centres of Latin America, Asia
and Africa.
International Rivers Network
IRN is a non-profit organisation of activists promoting sustainable and environmentally
sound alternatives to damming and channelling rivers, which often cause the
displacement of communities and peoples.
Norwegian Refugee Council
NRC is a private foundation, and one of the largest humanitarian organizations in
Norway. NRC has specialized in international activities for refugees and displaced
persons. Through its efforts they provide assistance and contribute towards the
protection of displaced people. In 1996 NRC launched the Global IDP Survey in
recognition of the urgent need for more systematic and regular reporting on the needs of
internally displaced people.
OXFAM
Founded in 1995, Oxfam is an international group of 11 autonomous non-government
organisations. Member organizations are of diverse cultures, history, and language, but

Slum Dwellers' International (Asia) / Shack Dwellers' International (Africa)
SDI was initiated in 1996 by a number of organisations and urban poor community
groups, as a people's process for strengthening grassroots savings and credit schemes.
Their approach is based on the recognition that collective savings and credit is a critical
tool for the urban poor in the worldwide struggle against poverty and socio-economic
injustice. In the course of their work, SDI affiliates often face the problem of evictions,
and have developed innovative methodologies to counter this.
StreetNet International
StreetNet International is an alliance of street vendors whose aim is to promote the exchange of information and ideas on critical issues facing street vendors, market vendors and hawkers (i.e. mobile vendors) and on practical organising and advocacy strategies. In preparation for the Fifa World Cup in 2010, StreetNet International has launched a campaign in South Africa for World Class Cities for All (WCCA), seeking to create a new, more inclusive concept of 'World Class Cities' that involves the participation of the urban poor.
Urban Resource Centre
The URC was set up in Karachi in 1989, by urban planning professionals,
representatives of NGOs, community organisations and teachers at professional
colleges. They felt that Karachi's official development plans ignored the larger socio-
economic reality of the city and as such were unworkable, unaffordable and
environmentally disastrous. They further felt that workable alternatives were required
and these were possible only with the involvement of informed communities and
interest groups. In the course of pursuing this mission, URC has done a great deal of
work on monitoring and preventing evictions.
US Committee for Refugees
USCR works to protect the human rights of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced
persons worldwide. USCR documents human rights abuses and serves as a watchdog
for refugee protection and assistance. Their site includes basic information on the
organization; news updates, including USCR press releases; descriptions of USCR Field
Operations, and USCR publications and resources.
